I've been working on my kitchen for quite some time now...
Having to put the whole project on hold for months due to a back injury... but this past month I found two cabinets that will work really well in my kitchen...These two cabinets were just sitting on the side of the road.. in someones trash!
(I just love people who toss good stuff)
This to me was quite a find because I am in the process of changing the entire kitchen.
This is the original kitchen...
Look at that 1980's ceiling... ucky, dark and dingy!
Don't laugh, but the back splash tile had bucking bronco horses on it....? I put white paint over it until I can replace it.
I worked on this most of last year.. and yes, I did the work myself. Not one person did I hire to help me...
It took some brute force, but I pulled down the entire ceiling and believe it or not.. it was rather easy. I then begged help from my husband, to help hold up the drywall for the ceiling.. but first I rewired, for the new
ceiling lights that will go up soon....
There is so much information on 'how to do electrical' on the internet, and to be sure, "I turned off the electric' before touching anything that looked like wires...lol
Ok.. back to the cabinets I found in the trash. I want to use these two cabinets on either side of the dishwasher,, more drawer space... but first I had to repaint them....
I found primer at my local Home Depot, that said on the label "no sanding needed"... did I trust this? don't think so! I did use my electric sander to take off the shine first.. then primed and painted with a heavy duty enamel paint... the same that I used on the original cabinets....
First I filled the drawer pull holes with wood filler.. my plan is to put new hardware on all the doors...
The new cabinets turned out wonderful... now to get the dishwasher moved back against the wall... it's sticking out to the right of the photo....I need some kind person to let me borrow a circular saw. I need to cut the counter top to get this moved.. (the new counter will be installed after I can get my Home Depot person out to measure it)
This project is taking more time than I had planned.. but I am finding that if I take my time I am finding so many ways to keep the budget down.
My kitchen will be so new and bright. I'm happy!
What a transformation! Looks great!

Aren't you the brave one! I have done a lot, but never would I have the chutzpah to pull down a ceiling alone! A tip of the hat to you. Your kitchen is looking good!

Your kitchen looks great. Cabinets for free, I like that and you have totally transformed them.
ReplyDeleteUnfitted cabinets always add character to a kitchen and your one-woman redo is quite amazing. Jane F
ReplyDeleteLove the cabinets! Great job on the kitchen, I will be following. Even electric work, I'm impressed. I'm a chicken :( jearls
ReplyDeleteWOW how brave. I need to do the same thing but too scared to even begin. I want to remove one cabinet like an "L" shape but would have to cut the counter and that has me stalled.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog and for the nice comment.]

It's really looking bright and cheery!

WOW! LOOK AT you go! So awesome of you to tackle something like that on your own! Brave and talented lady, it looks so GREAT! I hope your back is feeling better. As some one who is having her 4th spinal surgery in 2 weeks I know how much a PAIN back pain can be! LOL
ReplyDeleteWhat tremendous patience...it is coming along beautifully!
ReplyDeleteSandy,
ReplyDeleteThis project actually looks like fun; you’re my kind of DIY gal! I often run into dishwashers that are locked in on remodel jobs, because the floor was laid after the dishwasher was installed so it can’t slide out. It’s not a problem if you are installing new countertops, but it’s a big problem if the dishwasher ever needs to be changed out. To remedy this I have a subfloor laid down to equal the height of the floor which raises the dishwasher. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

Sandy,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't locate an email to write you so I'm writing here. Can I have permission to post your kitchen photo on my forum? It would be helpful to explain some ideas I have on the post you started. You can contact me by writing a comment on my blog or by my email.
Thanks,
Cathy
