Took a walk about through the yard today and noticed the "Bromeliads" were starting to bloom!
If you do not live in a Tropical area this plant is only grown indoors. But here in my yard they are like weeds.. really... they bloom only once, and then sprout a new plant at the root area.
My HOA keeps asking me to "cut them down and remove them" haha... like I'll do that.
I'm really not trying to be obstinate, it's just I really like the plants.
Their reasoning is, "they collect water in the little 'well' when the flower is over.. and in those little wells, the Mosquitoes lay their larve".
I do use organic spray to control the Mosquitoes back there and have never had a problem.
This patch of "Bromeliads" have already bloomed over the past few years and between each will be a new plant with a new bud showing soon. I like the bunched up look of the old plants.
Although I do have several varieties of these Tropical plants only one has a continuous regrowth. the others are very slow growers.

I think your flowers are beautiful. I wouldn't cut them down either.
ReplyDeleteIt's not as if they are unsightly. They are quite interesting. And you are taking care of any mosquito issues so you are good...in my humble opinion of course. ;)
ReplyDeleteI have something for you at my blog.
Bromeliads are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen one! They look almost like something out of a sci fi/fantasy movie or something. I really love the shape and color and would be just the same way as you are about cutting them down.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful flower!
I've always loved those plants, although I normally see them as a houseplant up North here. They look great planted in the ground too.
ReplyDeleteQuite pretty. I've never seen one outdoors before, I don't think. Thanks for the info & share, always fun to learn more!:>
ReplyDeleteI'd feel like I was on vacation with all the bromeliads in your garden! Perfect summer look, I'd say :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Bloomin' Tuesday! You have some beautiful 'weeds' there. I have lots of 'weeds' in my garden. They certainly look like summer.Great header! Thanks for sharing. Jean
ReplyDeleteBromeliads can't survive Oregon winters but they are often sold as houseplants. They are a fascinating plant, the flower is gorgeous. Thanks for visiting today and introducing me to your blog.
ReplyDeleteThose bromeliads do look exotic to me. I had to laugh about you liking the "bunched up look". I am with you. I like to fill up spaces, both inside and out.
ReplyDeleteWell, now, I'm going up to get rid of some of that inside "stuff" so I can use the room the stuff is in.
I hope your hoa and neighbor guy you mentioned on my blog leave you alone and let you enjoy your plants.
These are beautiful--thank you for posting the lovely photos!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting flower. I dont know that Ive ever seen one. Thanks for sharing, and Have a good rest of the week :)

ok..the bobcat thing...freaks me out..what about children & pets....wow! I think that I would not have known what to do..he is rather pretty though...but I would prefer a deer in my backyard..although there are some who would rather have the bobcat..deer eat everything up. I would love to look out my window and see a dear in my backyard...eating my plants or not..but the bobcat.....I'll get back you on that one.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful- I've never grown them before...maybe I'll have to see. Thanks for sharing at the TGP!
