Ginger

My Ginger plant is blooming.

This is only one of three species of Ginger in my garden.. not sure of the proper name of it.. but it's so pretty.

The blooms are hiding close to the ground. Above, are leaves on 6ft tall branches and I almost did not see the flowers growing among the ferns and other plants.

I planted this one about 4 years ago and it only had two flowers but this year I counted 8.  Each about 2ft tall. They come straight out of the ground and do not grow on one of it's leafy stems.

Wonder, if I dig up the root I'll find Ginger, the kind you cook with?  Guess I better do some googling and see when it's time to dig it up?

Wonder if the root is edible?

  2. I am curious about the ginger too. Please let us know what you find out. This sounds like something that really should be growing in my herb bed.

  3. Hi Sandy, once again, here is a plant I have never seen before. I am continually amazed by the diversity of the plant world! Oh, that is a gorgeous bloom; does it have any fragrance?

    Beautiful!

  4. Love the Zingiber zerumbet, Shampoo Ginger, Pinecone Ginger, Pinecone Lily....mine probably won't bloom this year as I planted them this past Spring.

  5. Thank you for visiting my blog Sandy, I am clearly no expert on gardening, but if there is anything that I can do to help you get adjusted to gardening in the south just give me a holler.....

  7. I live in southeast Alabama, would it grow here? Does it need a lot of sun or can it take some shade?

  8. What beautiful blooms they have. How did you first get this plant started? I have read that you can plant ginger roots from the grocery store and they will grow more ginger roots for you. Not sure if that's the same kind of ginger as what you have, so I'm curious about how your plant got started!

  10. Pine cone ginger, isn't it interesting? I have some that grows under oak trees on side of our property. I posted about them a couple of years ago. You can see them the post here:

I think I found then that they have medicinal properties.
I just linked with to your Tuesday Garden Party, and your sausage dish looks delicious, thanks!
